In a recent report, renowned journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed that Barcelona are keen on recruiting Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams this summer. It has been stated that the Catalan club are eyeing a move to recruit the Spanish speedster this off-season.
Williams’ Decent Run Of Form In La Liga
Williams enjoyed an impressive campaign at the Spanish club after he put in a series of decent displays for them in the final third. The 21-year-old scored eight goals and 19 assists in 37 matches for Athletic Bilbao last season in various competitions.
The Spanish talent gave a good account of himself in the final third based on his average of 1.8 shots, 1.5 key passes, 1.5 crosses and 2.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 79.2% in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for Hansi Flick to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
What Will Williams Add To Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick’s Side?
Williams is a fine dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. He has got the eye to play some decisive passes on the offensive end of the field and can shoot the ball with power and precision from long range.
The Spanish sensation is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger if asked to do so by his manager. We can expect him to add more pace and creativity to Barcelona boss Hansi Flick’s attack.
At 21, Williams has the potential to be a world-class winger someday. Hence, Barca would be wise to get him on board in this transfer window as he would help them compete for some major honours over the next decade. He already knows La Liga well by now and won’t take much time to adapt to life at the Nou Camp. With all things considered, Flick would be wise to step up his pursuit of the Spanish speedster before the end of this transfer period.
