If a report from The Daily Mail (as quoted by Football Scotland) is believed to be true, Rangers have their eyes on Aberdeen marksman Bojan Miovski ahead of a summer swoop. But the outlet has further claimed that the long-standing rivalry between these two sides might complicate any potential transfer.
The 25-year-old striking ace spent years in the top flight of Macedonian football with Bregalnica Štip, Rabotnički, Makedonija GP and Renova. He left his homeland at a very young age in favour of a transfer to MTK Budapest. Miovski spent a couple of years in Hungary before plying his trade to Aberdeen for €650k in the summer of 2022.
The North Macedonia international proved to be an instant success at Pittodrie as he netted 44 goals and laid on 7 more in 95 appearances donning the Aberdeen colours (stats via Transfermarket). He not only fine-tuned his style of play to attune to the aggression of the Scottish game but also exhibited his presence and poaching traits while spearheading the attack.
Meanwhile, Rangers are scripting a squad overhaul under Philippe Clement in the wake of a mass exodus. Veterans like John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin and Kemar Roofe have been released upon contract expiry, also, the club are willing to listen to offers for the fringe as well as experienced names who are past their prime. The future looks bleak for Scott Wright, Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers and Todd Cantwell who have failed to live up to the expectations, and the Belgian boss, therefore, is eyeing reinforcements to reconstruct his frontline.
Why Rangers Would Require A Prolific ‘Number 9’
Despite scoring 22 goals, Dessers has often been criticized for his lack of work rate and all-round game. Rangers would sanction his transfer for a suitable fee amid interest from the Greek side PAOK but, at the same time, needs to find an able alternative who would fire in goals and contribute to the attacking build-ups.
Hearts centre-forward Lawrence Shankland remains a target, but the Jambos have slapped a £5m asking fee for the Scotsman. With his contract set to expire next summer, the Light Blues are not expected to meet those demands considering they can have him for nothing by the end of the 2024-25 season.
Although adding Hamza Igamane would excite the fans, the Moroccan talent might need time to adapt to the grind and demands of Premiership football. Danilo’s return from injury should bolster the Gers, but the arrival of Miovski would improve the conversion rate if he carries his Aberdeen form.
Yet a move to Ibrox seems unlikely at this stage. Rangers have roped in Connor Barron as a free agent and the Pittodrie side are now ready to go to the tribunal for the training compensation fee having rejected the Gers’ opening £525,000 offer. The past transfer saga surrounding Jack and Wright won’t help them either and it remains to be seen how things shape up for these two clubs in the forthcoming future.
