In a recent report, The Mirror claimed that Arsenal are eyeing a move for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori. It has been stated that the Gunners are showing interest in recruiting the Italy international but are facing competition from Liverpool, Chelsea and Juventus in the summer.
Calafiori’s Impressive Form In Serie A
Calafiori had a terrific campaign at the Italian club as he put in a string of impressive displays for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The 22-year-old scored two goals and picked up five assists in 37 matches for Bologna last season in all competitions.
The Italian defensive ace caught the eye when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.6 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the back after completing 89.8% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Italian club will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for the Gunners to arrange a cut-price move for him this off-season.
Should Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Bring Calafiori On Board?
Calafiori is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive.
Standing at 1.88m, the Italian sensation can dominate the opposition attackers in the air as well. He is even proficient at playing his way out from the back. We can expect Calafiori to add more bite and steel to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s defence.
At 22, Calafiori has his best years ahead of him which makes him a worthy target for the Gunners to pursue this summer. However, he might need some time to adjust to life in Premier League football.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting the Italy international as he might help Arsenal challenge for some major honours over the next decade. Plus, he would serve as an ideal replacement for Jakub Kiwoir if he parts ways with the North London club in this transfer window.
