West Ham United Are Showing Interest In This Ligue 1 Striker: Should Lopetegui Go For Him?

In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that West Ham United are showing interest in Lille striker Jonathan David. It has been mentioned that the Hammers would have to rival Chelsea in the race to acquire the services of the Canadian forward.

David’s Impressive Form In French Football Last Season

David had a productive campaign at the French club after he put in a series of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 24-year-old found the back of the net 26 times and picked up nine assists in 47 matches for Lille last season across multiple competitions.

The Canadian talent has been a good performer for the French outfit in the final third as he averaged 2.3 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in Ligue 1. He was even tidy when distributing the ball after making 82.7% of his attempted passes in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the French club will run out at the end of next season which could give West Ham a chance to sign him on the cheap later this year.

Should West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui Go For David?

David excels at finding some space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has proven himself to be a capable finisher in front of the opposition goal and can even engineer the odd chance for his teammates up top.

However, the Canadian sensation is still unproven at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in the Premier League. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting a player of David’s skillset. Hence, it makes sense for the Hammers to go for him in this summer transfer window.

At 24, David has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good fit for West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui’s needs in the long run. However, there are some question marks over whether he can maintain his good form in Premier League football if the Hammers manage to bring him on board this off-season.
