According to The Athletic, Chelsea are interested in signing Lille striker Jonathan David in the summer transfer window. The Premier League club are in talks with the player’s agent over the possible move ahead of the next season.
Jonathan David’s impressive numbers
Jonathan David developed his early football at Belgian side Gent before moving to Lille in the summer of 2020. He faced difficulty settling at his new home initially but improved with time. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the best strikers in the Ligue 1.
David was magnificent in the recently concluded club season. He netted 26 goals and provided nine goals in the 47 games he featured in. He averaged 2.3 shots, 0.9 key passes, and 0.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Canadian can adapt to different playing styles due to his link-up abilities. As he is comfortable on the ball, he finds his teammates easily and often creates chances. He is also effective in his finishing around the penalty box but isn’t very good at converting aerial opportunities.
An upgrade of Nicolas Jackson
Chelsea are eyeing to reinforce their offensive unit ahead of next season. Though they have Nicolas Jackson as the striker, it seems like the player still needs time to develop his game. Hence, the club are aiming at bringing a forward who can help secure more goals upfront.
The Blues pulled out of the race for Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise and have turned their focus towards Jonathan David. It’s a move in the right direction as the 24-year-old has been a consistent performer over the past couple of seasons.
David’s arrival will help the side score more goals as his link-up play is also solid. Moreover, he has yet to hit his peak years and can serve the club for many years to come. However, Chelsea will have to beat Manchester United in the race to get his signature.
