In a recent report, The Daily Express claimed that Aston Villa have set their sights on Real Sociedad playmaker Brais Mendez. It has been stated that the Villans have made contact to land the Spanish attacker but are facing competition from Manchester United, AS Roma and Juventus in pursuit of him this summer.
Mendez’s Impressive Numbers In Premier League Football
Mendez is having a decent campaign at the West Midlands club as he put in a series of impressive displays for them in the final third. The Argentine playmaker made 44 appearances for the Villans last season, scoring eight goals and grabbing nine assists in multiple competitions.
The 27-year-old caught the eye at times in the final third and did well to average 2.1 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 81% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Aston Villa will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for the Villans to land him on the cheap later this year.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Get Mendez On Board?
Mendez is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to orchestrate a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third. He usually generates some power with his shot attempts from long range. The Spanish talent is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a right-winger if asked to do so.
We can expect Mendez to add more firepower to Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s attacking department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular starting place at Villa Park in the coming years.
At 27, Mendez is playing in his prime at the moment but might need some time to adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football if the West Midlands club can sign him this summer.
Mendez would no doubt help the Villans cope with fixture congestion better, so Emery should focus on getting him on board this off-season.
