In a recent Q&A with Football.London, journalist Alasdair Gold revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are showing interest in re-signing Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards this summer. Gold said,
“Spurs have certainly considered a return for Marcus Edwards, with their former winger counting as club-trained and available at a cut price from Sporting due to their 35% sell-on clause,”
Edwards’ Decent Run Of Form In Portuguese Football
Edwards had an impressive campaign at the Portuguese club after he put in a string of decent displays for them in the final third. The 25-year-old registered six goals and nine assists in 44 appearances for Sporting CP last season across all fronts.
The London-born talent has been a solid performer inside his half based on his average of 1.3 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in the Liga Portugal. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 80.5% in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2026. Hence it won’t be easy for Spurs to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
Is Edwards A Good Option For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Edwards excels at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in on-target. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes on the offensive end of the field and is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet.
The English sensation is primarily a right-winger but can also play as a left-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if told to do so. He already knows Tottenham well from his time with them as a youth player. Hence, the talented attacker won’t take much time to settle into life at the North London club.
At 25, the best is yet to come from Edwards. Therefore, Spurs would be wise to move in for him in this summer transfer window. We can expect him to inject more firepower into Angelos Postecoglu’s attack. All in all, he would be an excellent option for the North London giants to consider this summer.
