The club have announced that Steven Gerrard has been assigned the position of the academy coach of Liverpool. The 36-year-old will begin his work from the next month.
Gerrard had spent his entire career at Liverpool except for the last season. He ended his 17 years long association with the club and decided to join MLS side LA Galaxy. He announced his retirement in last November.
Gerrard has been at the Reds academy for quite a while as he is honing his coaching skills. Jurgen Klopp had earlier offered the midfielder to help him with the first time but he wanted to start it from the scratch. The ex-England international has appeared in more than 700 matches for the Merseyside club.
Gerrard said, “I want to be a manager. I want to be the best manager I can be eventually and this is the beginning of the journey.
“As I said earlier on, it’s about development, it’s about improving and I know exactly where I am.
“I could have taken other coaching positions and management roles on name or reputation, but I think that would have been a stupid thing to do and a decision on emotion.
“Having spoken to the likes of Jurgen, Alex Inglethorpe Steve Heighway and other important people around, this was the most sensible decision and the best decision for me for where I want to get to in the future.”
