In a recent report, The Daily Mail mentioned that Newcastle United have identified Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford as a target for the upcoming transfer window. It is understood that the Magpies are eyeing a move to bring the English shot-stopper to St. James’ Park later this summer.
Trafford’s Impressive Form In Premier League Football
Trafford enjoyed a solid campaign at Turf Moor but failed to help Burnley avoid getting relegated from the Premier League. The English keeper has played in 28 matches for his current club this season, shipping in 62 goals but picking up just two clean sheets in multiple competitions.
The former Manchester City youth player deserves some credit for averaging 1.4 clearances and 6.5 long balls per game in the Premier League. However, the 21-year-old has been sloppy when distributing the ball from the back after making just 62.1% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Trafford is under contract at the Lancashire club until the summer of 2027, so Newcastle would have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting the talented keeper later this year.
Is Trafford A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Trafford can be a good pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing well for his team. He has got quick reflexes that help him make a few solid saves at the back. The English youngster is a decent handler of the ball as well but needs to improve his passing accuracy if he wants to be a success story at the highest level.
Still, there is no doubt that Trafford is good enough to rival Nick Pope for a regular starting spot at Newcastle United next season. He would inject more quality into Eddie Howe’s goalkeeping department.
Trafford might even help the Magpies stay competitive across all fronts in the coming years. He has already earned some valuable experience in Premier League football and won’t take much time to settle into life at St. James’ Park. Thus, the English talent would be a great choice for the Tyneside club to consider in the summer transfer window. However, Howe needs to be patient with his development before he can get the best out of the young keeper.
