Nothing lasts forever, everything has an end. With that being said, Pep Guardiola’s time at Manchester City might be done soon as he has entered into the final 12 months of his contract. While there were speculations that he might leave the club after this season, the 53-year-old openly insisted that he isn’t going anywhere for the 2024-25 season.
However, it makes sense to believe that the next campaign would be the legendary manager’s last at Etihad Stadium, where he came in 2016. He might not be interested in extending his contract any further and would like to look to get involved in a new challenge.
Guardiola has done wonders ever since landing in the Premier League. He transformed the Citizens into a force to be reckoned with. Under his guidance, they have won six league titles, including a record four in a row, and a Champions League and other notable trophies.
Practically, now or later, the English club will have to look for replacement options in the market. Though it won’t be easy to fill the big shoes, the management will try to bring in the best candidate. In this piece, let’s take a look at three possible names who can be hired for the designated role.
1. Michel
Michel’s recent work at Girona hasn’t gone unnoticed. His implementations guided the Spanish side to finish at third position in the La Liga. At one point in time, they were even fighting for the title but slipped away in the last few weeks.
However, that shouldn’t take anything away from the standards they set. Interestingly, Girona are operating on the same ownership as City and that makes him a viable target.
2. Roberto De Zerbi
Many would be surprised to read Roberto De Zerbi‘s name on the list but trust us, don’t be! Despite his failed tenure at Brighton & Hove Albion, he remains a lucrative name for the role. He likes his side to play an attacking possession-based football, similar to Pep Guardiola.
The 44-year-old was even linked to Liverpool this season after Jurgen Klopp announced his departure. However, he will have to wait a year if he wants to throw his name for selection.
3. Xabi Alonso
The most realistic name is Xabi Alonso for now. His stocks have surged following an almost invisible season with Bayer Leverkusen. He is a tactical genius, can manage heavy weights in the dressing room, and might be open to a long-term project.
Alonso decided to stay one more year at the Bundesliga club, which makes him an ideal target. However, several clubs like Real Madrid and Liverpool are also keen on bringing him on board.
