In a recent report on Patreon, journalist Alan Nixon mentioned that Everton are keeping a keen eye on Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl. It has been claimed that the Toffees are eager to bring the German talent to Goodison Park this summer.
Rohl’s Impressive Form In German Football This Season
Rohl has managed to put in a handful of eye-catching displays at the centre of Freiburg’s midfield during this Bundesliga campaign. The 21-year-old has scored three goals and grabbed four assists in 34 appearances for the German club this season across various competitions.
The Berlin-born talent has been a good performer in the middle of the park as he is averaging 0.9 tackles, 0.9 clearances, 1.0 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga. He has also taken care of the ball when distributing possession from midfield after completing 80.8% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
However, Rohl is currently sidelined because of a serious muscle injury. Thus, he might prove to be a risky option for Everton to consider in the upcoming transfer window.
Should Everton Snap Rohl Up This Summer?
Rohl is a good tackler of the ball and doesn’t mind clearing his lines when required. He is a decent passer of the ball and can generate some power with his shot attempts. Rohl is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play as a right-sided wide player or operate in the number ten position if asked to do so. The German starlet can even set up a few promising chances for others around him in the final third. He can also make some driving runs with the ball from midfield.
Rohl would no doubt enhance the quality of Everton’s midfield department. He has the potential to be a success story at Goodison Park in the long run as long as the Toffees are willing to be patient with his development. However, Rohl would need some time to adjust to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
At 21, the future looks quite promising for the German starlet. Therefore, it makes sense for the Merseyside club to try and snap Rohl up when the transfer window commences later this summer.
