Shkodran Mustafi has revealed that Per Mertesacker had a great influence on his career. Mustafi arrived at the Emirates for a fee around £35m.
The 24-year-old proved to be Arsene Wenger’s masterstroke as the Gunners seem to have finally found a solution to their long-standing defensive woes.
The German defender was a part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad and has adapted himself beautifully to the atmosphere of England. He has been a regular in Arsene Wenger’s starting lineup since his arrival.
Mertesacker recently returned to training having been injured for a long time. He hasn’t featured for a single time this season and will have to fight with Gabriel and Rob Holding for a place in the starting lineup.
Mustafi said, “Per helped me a lot.
“When I had just arrived, having a person at the club with so much experience and with the personality he has helped me a lot.
“He helps me on the pitch because when he sees things, he corrected me a few times.
“He’s not just the type of player who says, ‘You didn’t do that well enough’ or, ‘You have to do it this way’, he tells you why.
“In the short time that I worked with him in the national team, I learned a lot from him.”
