Premier League club Newcastle United have taken a major blow just before the international break. Reliable defender Sven Botman‘s ACL injury has sidelined him for the rest of the ongoing campaign and the majority of next season.
Hence, the Magpies will need to bring in a new defender in the summer to fill the Dutch’s position. The club have identified Joe Rodon as a viable target, according to TEAMtalk. They believe he can be the man to do the needful job for the team.
Joe Rodon has been phenomenal in the Championship this season
Grown-up in the United Kingdom, Joe Rodon signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2020 for a reported fee of £11 million. However, he failed to earn the faith of the management and hence, was loaned to Rennes. He is currently on a loan to Leeds United, where he has performed impressively.
The 26-year-old has featured in 39 games this season so far. He is averaging 1 tackle, 1.2 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per game. His defensive work has been effective and neat. The defender is also comfortable on the ball, allowing the side to play passes from the back (stats via whoscored).
Leeds United are leading the Championship and are likely to be promoted to Premier League next season. Rodan has played a vital role in their ongoing successful campaign. Hence, many clubs have been keeping tabs on the player.
Will Newcastle United be able to get hands on Joe Rodon?
Newcastle United need the urgency to sign a new formidable defender. They also know that Joe Rodon has no future at Tottenham Hotspur, especially after the arrival of Radu Dragusin. Hence, they want to sign his services for next season.
Spurs are ready to sell the asset for around £10-15 million. However, the Welsh player is likely to prefer a permanent move to Leeds United as he will be a guaranteed name on the starting lineup. If that happens, it will be a big blow to the Magpie’s pursuit.
