Newcastle United have set their eyes on Wolves star Joao Gomes for the summer transfer window, according to a report published in The Mirror. The club want to bolster their midfield unit ahead of next season to fight for major titles.
Counterparts Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in acquiring the midfielder. However, Wolves won’t let the player leave for a cheap cost and reportedly want around £40 million to sanction his move.
Joao Gomes has high potential
After performing for Flamengo, Joao Gomes signed for Wolves in the winter of 2023 for a reported fee of €18.7m. In a short time, he managed to establish himself at his new home and become an integral part of the playing lineup.
The Brazilian midfielder has featured in 28 games this season so far, netting twice and assisting once. He is averaging 3.3 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per game. On the offensive front, he has an average of 0.7 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.7 dribbles each game (stats via whoscored).
Better known for his defensive works, Gomes is very good at reading the game and defusing threats. With good tackling skills, he provides an extra layer of defence. He is also good at distributing the ball and can add long passes in his armoury with time and experience.
Will Newcastle United make an official move?
Newcastle United understand the need to bring in a new defensive midfielder in the summer amid the possible exit of Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian player is on the radar of multiple clubs, who are ready to break the bank to get his signature.
Hence, the Magpies are searching for his backup and have identified Joao Gomes. He can be an ideal fit for the position and a long-term solution. Though Wolves will hesitate to sell their hot property to the direct rival, they might be tempted to sell him alongside more names due to their financial situation.
