English side Newcastle United have been recruiting talents to fight for all the prestigious trophies in the coming seasons. The club now have identified Napoli star Victor Osimhen as a potential target for the summer transfer window, according to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness.
The Magpies want to bolster their attacking line with the arrival of the Nigerian footballer. However, major European clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are also highly interested in getting the signature of the striker.
Victor Osimhen is an established name
Victor Osimhen is considered one of the best active strikers across the globe. He has established himself at the Italian club ever since arriving in 2020. He has been scoring goals for fun this season and has attracted the attention of the big clubs.
The 25-year-old has featured in 24 games this season so far, netting 13 goals and contributing four assists. He is averaging 3.2 shots, 0.8 key passes, and 0.6 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored). His strong points lie in finishing, heading, and winning aerial duels.
However, Osimhen can improve in areas like passing, holding onto the ball and offside awareness. Despite that, he remains an attractive player for many clubs. He has a whopping release clause of €130 million in his contract which runs until 2026.
Can Newcastle United sign Victor Osimhen realistically?
Newcastle United have failed to reach the standards they did in the previous season. Hence, they are aware of the fact that they need to strengthen the squad ahead of next season. Their alleged interest in Victor Osimhen is a move in that direction for sure.
However, the Magpies will have to trigger the €130 million release clause to lure away the striker. It seems difficult as they aren’t in the best financial shape. The club are unlikely to get a Champions League spot for next season, which degrades their case in the race for the striker.
