In a recent report, journalists Dean Jones and Harry Whittingham mentioned that Newcastle United are unlikely to move in for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips who is currently playing on loan at West Ham United. It has been revealed that the Magpies are unlikely to make a move for the English talent in the upcoming transfer window.
Phillips’ Loan Spell Of Mixed Emotions At West Ham So Far
Phillips is having an up-and-down loan spell at the London Stadium as he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in David Moyes’ first team. The English midfield ace has participated in eight matches for the Hammers this season but has failed to score or assist a goal for them so far.
The 28-year-old has anchored the midfield well at times by averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.5 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 81.6% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Manchester City will run out in 2028 which would make it tough for the Magpies to get a deal done for him on the cheap in the summer.
Is Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Making The Right Call With Regards To Phillips?
Phillips loves a tackle in the middle of the park and can make some crucial interceptions for his team when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. He can strike the ball purely from long range and usually works hard for his team in both halves.
However, the English talent has endured his fair share of injuries during his time at Man City. Hence, he would have been a risky option for Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe to consider in the summer transfer window.
It seems like the Magpies are making the right call by dropping their interest in Phillips. The Tyneside club would be better off opting for a more proven midfielder when the transfer window reopens later this year.
Phillips would also struggle to earn regular playing opportunities at St. James’ Park. All in all, the Magpies would be wise to avoid recruiting the English midfielder this summer.
