In a recent report, Sport stated that Manchester United have expressed their interest in Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. It has been claimed that the Red Devils would face competition from Arsenal and Barcelona in the race to land the Belgian talent in the summer.
Onana’s Tough Season At Goodison Park
Onana has endured a difficult campaign at the Merseyside club as he has struggled to help them be consistent in the Premier League. The 22-year-old has been involved in 27 matches for the Toffees this season, netting three goals and picking up one assist in various competitions.
The Belgian talent deserves some credit for averaging 2.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 84.2% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Goodison Park will expire in the summer of 2027 which would make it tough for the Red Devils to land him on the cheap in the summer transfer window.
Should Manchester United Boss Erik Ten Hag Snap Onana Up?
Onana loves a tackle at the centre of the park and can make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half when he is playing well on the pitch. He usually clears his lines when required and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes from midfield. The Belgian talent can shoot the ball purely and with venom from long range but needs to find a way to add more goals and assists to his game.
Onana has got enough experience in the Premier League and won’t take much time to settle into life at Old Trafford if Erik ten Hag can acquire his services later this year. At 22, he has the potential to become a world-class player in his position someday.
Therefore, Man United would be wise to try everything they can to snap Onana up when the transfer window reopens at the end of this campaign. He would strengthen ten Hag’s midfield department and would help the Red Devils challenge across all fronts in the coming years. Thus, he would be good addition to Man United‘s squad in the long run.
