In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Dean Jones urged Aston Villa to move in for Inter Milan wide player Denzel Dumfries in the summer. Jones said,
“Yeah, there’s obviously a link there. It’s a big upgrade, though, to get somebody like Dumfries from where they’ve been in recent years. So it depends really on how well you can sell the club to the player. Villa are having a bit of a tricky time of things and a bit of a wobble at the moment. So it will probably also depend on exactly how high up the Premier League table they end up finishing.”
Dumfries’ Impressive Run Of Form In Italian Football
Dumfries has enjoyed a decent campaign at the Milan club after putting in a series of impressive performances for them on the right flank. The Dutch talent has netted three goals and earned four assists in 22 matches for Inter Milan this season in all competitions.
The 27-year-old has been a positive influence in both halves as he is averaging 0.9 tackles, 0.8 clearances, 0.8 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been careful when distributing possession from the right wing based on his pass completion rate of 78.3% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Go For Dumfries?
Dumfries is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when required and can create the odd chance for his teammates from the wide areas.
The Dutch sensation can shoot the ball with power from long range and can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals. He mainly operates as a right-winger but can also play as a right-back if told to do so.
We can expect Dumfries to bring more quality and depth to Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s match-day squad. He is good enough to make himself a regular starter at Villa Park in the coming seasons.
At 27, Dumfries is entering the peak years of his career, so Emery should consider going for him in the summer transfer window.
