In a recent report, Relevo claimed that FC Barcelona are not keen on offering a new contract to their first-team captain Sergi Roberto, whose contract is set to expire after this season. The decision is likely to be conveyed to the player by none other than the club’s sporting director, Deco.
Sergi Roberto Still Adds Value To the Club
Sergi Roberto has been a valuable player for the Spanish club this season despite participating in only 14 games so far. He missed out on so many games due to injuries and tactical selections. Despite getting limited game time, he found the back of the net three times and also provided an assist.
The versatile footballer played at multiple positions throughout the season but his best came as a midfielder. His quality passing and ability to make good offensive runs added a lot to Xavi’s side. However, he was often found out of the position and failed restrict the opponent’s attack.
Barcelona will not offer a new contract to Sergi Roberto: Good move for all the parties involved?
Understandably, Barca might no longer extend Sergi Roberto’s contract, especially after the announcement of Xavi’s department. Xavi has been the one who always wanted Roberto in the squad and heaped praises for him whenever he got an opportunity.
However, as a new manager is set to take charge at the Camp Nou next season, Roberto might not be the most desirable player. His struggle with regular injuries is not hidden and he also lacks defensive ability, which restricts his utmost use as a player. In the midfield, the Catalans have better options and can also groom La Masia youngsters.
From Roberto’s point of view, it will be the right time to move on and put curtains on his 14-year-long career at Barcelona. He has served the club with all his heart and won multiple trophies. Despite contributing so much over the years, he has been at the centre of the criticism by the fans.
The 31-year-old may not continue in Europe and move to the United States to play in the MLS. He expressed his desire to play in the league back in 2022. He can join his former Barcelona teammates like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
