In a recent report, Calciomercato mentioned that Newcastle United are facing tough competition for Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners. It has been claimed that the Magpies will have to rival Liverpool, Napoli and Juventus in pursuit of the Dutch midfield ace this month.
Koopmeiners’ Impressive Form In Serie A This Season
Koopmeiners is enjoying a decent campaign at Atalanta after producing a run of impressive performances for them at the centre of the park. The 25-year-old has found the back of the net on seven occasions and grabbed four assists in 26 matches for the Italian outfit this season across multiple competitions.
The Dutch talent has given a good account of himself by averaging 1.3 tackles, 1.2 clearances, 1.6 shots, 2.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in Serie A. He has even been careful when distributing possession from midfield after making 81.9% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Italian club will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, it won’t be easy for the Magpies to sign him on a cut-price deal in this January transfer period.
Newcastle United Are Facing Stiff Competition For Koopmeiners: Is He Worth The Fight?
Koopmeiners is a tough-tackling midfielder who usually clears the danger when required. He can strike the ball purely and with power from long range. The Dutch sensation has got the vision to create a few decent chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half and can make some energetic runs from midfield.
Koopmeiners is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also serve as a box-to-box midfielder or play in the number ten position if told to do so. He would no doubt enhance the quality of Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s midfield.
At 25, Koopmeiners’ best years are ahead of him which makes him a decent option for the Magpies to consider in this winter transfer window. However, only time will tell whether the Dutch midfielder can cope with the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football if Howe manages to bring him to St. James’ Park before the end of this month.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting someone with Koopmeiners’ skillset. Hence, he would be well worth the fight for Newcastle this January.
