In a recent print edition, Record mentioned that Newcastle United have registered their interest in Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande. It has been stated that the Magpies are eyeing a move to recruit the Ivory Coast centre-back.
Diomande’s Decent Run Of Form In Portuguese Football This Season
Diomande is having a decent season at the Portuguese club after putting in a run of impressive displays at the heart of their backline. The 20-year-old has scored two goals and grabbed one assist in 21 matches for Sporting CP during this campaign across various competitions.
The 20-year-old has caught the eye at times when defending inside his half as he is averaging 1.5 tackles and 1.7 clearances per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from the back after completing 91.2% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Sporting will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, Newcastle will have to make a sizable offer if they are serious about signing him before the end of this month.
Is Diomande A Decent Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Diomande is a good tackler of the ball and can make life tough for the opposition attackers inside his half. He can scan the danger well and doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed. The Ivory Coast sensation excels at playing his way out from the back. Standing at 1.90m, he can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition in the air as well.
Diomande will add more bite and steel to Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s defence. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.
At 20, the future looks quite bright for Diomande as long as he continues to improve with each season. Hence, he would be a great choice for the Magpies to consider in the long run.
Diomande might even help the Tyneside club compete for some major trophies over the next decade. Therefore, Newcastle would be wise to go all out to snap him up before the end of this January transfer period.
