According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are eyeing a move for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata this month. After a decent start to the season, the Gunners are once again having injury concerns up front, and with the season heating up for a nervy finish, Wenger would need depth in his squad to ensure they don’t bottle it in the end.
Theo Walcott, who was in a good goal scoring form, is out for two to three weeks, Lucas Perez has been in and out with his ankle problems since coming and Danny Welbeck has just returned after a serious injury that kept him out for many months. The only reliable options for Wenger up front are Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud. A move for Morata, thus, seems quite understandable from the Arsenal gaffer.
Wenger has been a long-time admirer of the Spanish international and he has been pretty impressive since returning from his spell at Juventus. Although his rise at Santiago Bernabeu has been halted by injuries, he has still managed to be Zidane’s second favourite after Karim Benzema.
Now that he has returned after a month-long absence, he is hungry for goals but he is seeing his chances drying up. The 24-year-old has scored 9 times for Real Madrid in 23 appearances so far and provided four assists. He has come on from the bench most of the times and with Arsenal willing to offer him a regular starting time, he could very well take the opportunity.
Los Blancos, however, aren’t very keen on parting ways with Morata. As per Spanish OK Daario via Telegraph, Madrid are looking at him as a future prospect as Benzema will soon enter the dusk of his career. But, with their transfer ban lifted, they could go for more options now, which might push Morata further down the pecking order.
Morata’s finishing is superb, whether it is from a long distance or a short, and with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil behind him to provide the service, he could make Arsenal a devastating team in the attacking third. His pace on the ball and dribbling skills make him a suitable player on the wings too and with Giroud in absolute sublime form at the moment, Morata’s deployment on the right flank would make a good sense as well.
Arsenal are currently fifth in the League and within a touching distance of the teams above them. They are scheduled to play Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages and next month and will need better depth even though Morata will be cup-tied.
