In a recent report, The Sun claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea as a target. It has been stated that Spurs could face competition in the form of Arsenal in the race to land the Spanish wide player.
Barrenetxea’s Season Of Mixed Emotions In La Liga
Barrenetxea has experienced an up-and-down season in La Liga as he has struggled to find consistency with his offensive contributions for the Spanish club. However, the 22-year-old deserves some credit for scoring four times and earning a couple of assists in 22 matches for Real Sociedad during this campaign across all competitions.
The Spanish sensation has done well to average 1.4 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per game in La Liga. However, he lacks quality when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 71.4% in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, Spurs would have to make a big offer if they want to get him on board before the end of this month.
Is Barrenetxea A Good Option For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Barrenetxea is a decent dribbler with the ball and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out in the wide areas. He has got the vision to create some decent plays for others around him and can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range. However, the Spanish wing wizard has to find a way to be more productive in front of the opposition goal.
Barrenetxea mainly functions as a right-winger but can also fill in as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so by his manager. We can expect him to bring more quality to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s frontline. He is good enough to rival Dejan Kulusevski for a regular place in Spurs‘ first team.
At 22, Barrenetxea has the potential to become a success story at the North London club in the long run. With all things considered, the Spaniard would be a great option for Tottenham to consider in this winter transfer period. However, the jury is still out on whether he can adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
