In a recent segment, Sky Sports News stated that Everton are among the clubs hoping to land Manchester City talent Kalvin Phillips. It is believed that the Toffees could face competition in the form of Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Juventus in the race to land the English midfielder.
Phillips’ Lackluster Campaign In The Premier League
The 28-year-old has failed to nail down a regular first-team spot at the Mancunian club this season but has still managed to prove his worth at times in the middle of the park. Phillips has been involved in ten matches for Man City during this campaign, scoring one goal in all competitions.
The English sensation has seen a lot of his playing time come as a substitute which could be why he is only averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has distributed the ball accurately from midfield after making 89.7% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Etihad Stadium will run out in 2028. However, Phillips’ current situation at Man City could open the door for the Toffees to sign him before the end of this transfer window.
Is Phillips A Decent Choice For Everton Boss Sean Dyche?
Phillips is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few crucial interceptions for his team when he is playing regularly on the pitch. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and is an accurate passer of the ball as well.
The English talent can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range. He mainly plays as a holding midfielder but can also fill in as a centre-back or as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so.
We can expect Phillips to bring more bite and steel to Everton head coach Sean Dyche’s midfield department. He has what it takes to help the Toffees steer clear of the relegation zone in the Premier League this season.
Hence, the Merseyside club should try their best to win the race for Phillips this month. At 28, he is currently in his prime and is good enough to make an immediate impact at Goodison Park if Dyche manage to get a deal done for him this January.
