In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo stated that Newcastle United are showing interest in Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen. It has been claimed that the Magpies are eyeing a move to bring the Danish talent to St. James’ Park this winter.
Christensen’s Impressive Campaign At The Nou Camp
Christensen is having a decent season at the Catalan club as he has put in a series of solid displays at the centre of Xavi’s defence. The 27-year-old has featured in 20 matches for Barca during this campaign, securing one assist across all fronts.
The Danish defensive ace has been a good performer when defending inside his half and has done well to average 0.6 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 1.7 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from the back based on his pass completion rate of 95.9% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Christensen is under contract at the Nou Camp until the summer of 2026. Thus, Newcastle will have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting the Denmark international this January.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Snap Christensen Up?
Christensen is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure possession back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot.
The Denmark international can even use his strong 1.87m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. He excels at playing his way out from the back. Christensen already knows the Premier League well from his time at Chelsea and won’t take much time to settle into life in England.
Thus, it makes sense for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to try and snap him up this winter or at the end of this campaign. He is good enough to secure a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park and could help the Magpies compete across all competitions over the next few yeas.
At 27, Christensen is about to enter his prime soon which makes him a worthy target for the Tyneside club to pursue this year.
