Chelsea is in the middle of the Premier League table due to a poor season so far. Mykhailo Mudryk, who cost almost 100 million euros, has not performed well and has been a major disappointment. However, Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino defended him and believes in his potential.
Mauricio Pochettino defends Mykhailo Mudryk
Mauricio Pochettino has defended Mykhaylo Mudryk and thinks he will do well later on. Mudryk has had a tough time playing consistently since he joined Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023. However, Pochettino believes a lot in Mudryk’s skills and what he can bring to Chelsea. The coach wants fans and the media to be patient because the 22-year-old player is already showing good signs for the future.
“Trust me, Mudryk’s going to be a very important player. Give him some time. He’s already an important player — but he’s going to improve a lot because the potential is massive. We are happy with him and his development,” Pochettino said.

Mudryk signed a very long contract, almost nine years ago, when he joined Chelsea. Mudryk’s beginning with the team hasn’t been great. Last season, he played 17 games and only helped with two goals. This season is a bit better, with three goals and two assists in 18 games for Chelsea in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s poor run got worse on Christmas Eve when they lost their 19th Premier League game of the year to Wolves, with a score of 2-1. Mario Lemina scored for the Wolves in the second half, and Matt Doherty took advantage of a mistake from Benoit Badiashile in the 93rd minute. Even though Christopher Nkunku scored a nice header three minutes later, it wasn’t sufficient, and Wolves won, tying with Chelsea in points after 18 games.
Raheem Sterling and Jackson from the Blues had good opportunities, but the team played poorly and lacked discipline. This result makes them share the worst record in the league for 2023, along with Nottingham Forest, Fulham, and Bournemouth, all losing 19 games.
