In a recent print edition, Marca offered an update on Barcelona and their pursuit of Everton star Amadou Onana. It has been revealed that the Catalan club would have to pay around €50m to bring the Belgian talent on board next year.
Onana’s Impressive Run Of Form At Merseyside This Season
Onana has enjoyed a solid campaign at the Merseyside club so far as he has managed to put in a run of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The 22-year-old has registered two goals and picked up one assist in 17 matches for Everton this season across all competitions.
The Dakar-born talent has been a positive influence in both halves based on his average of 2.5 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.2 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 85.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Onana is under contract at Everton until the summer of 2027 which would make it difficult for Barcelona to sign him on the cheap this January or at the end of this campaign.
What Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Do With Regards To Onana?
Onana is a tough-tackling midfielder who can time his challenges well to make some timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can even create some inviting chances for his teammates going forward.
The Belgian sensation is a good striker of the ball as well and can make a few energetic runs with the ball from midfield. However, he has still not proven his worth in European football and might need some time to adjust to life at the Nou Camp.
We can expect Onana to bring a lot of quality to Barcelona boss Xavi’s midfield department. He has what it takes to nail down a regular starting spot in Barca‘s first XI. At 22, the future looks quite bright for Onana as long as he continues to improve with each year.
With all things considered, Xavi would be wise to try and move in for the Belgium international as he could help Barcelona compete for some major trophies over the next decade.
