In a recent tweet, journalist Marco Conterio stated that Newcastle United have joined the race for LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David. It is believed that the Magpies have now entered the chase to land the Canadian striker next year.
David’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1
The 23-year-old is enjoying a decent campaign at the French club as he has put in a string of impressive performances for them on the offensive end of the field. David has found the back of the net seven times and earned a couple of assists in 22 matches for Lille this season across all competitions.
The Canadian sensation has proven himself to be a capable presence in the final third and has done well to average 2.1 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 football. He has even been careful when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 80.8% in the French top-flight (stats via whoscored).
David is under contract at the French club until the summer of 2025. Therefore, the Magpies will have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about winning the race to sign the Canada international this January.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For David?
David can create some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has proven himself to be a good finisher in the final third and can engineer some decent openings for others around him in and around the opponent’s penalty box.
The Canadian talent can lead the line well for his team and usually takes care of the ball in the opposition half. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in England if Newcastle manage to bring him on board in 2024.
David would undoubtedly add plenty of goals to Eddie Howe‘s attack. He might even help the Magpies compete for some major trophies over the next few seasons. Thus, the Tyneside club should go for the Lille star when the transfer window reopens at the start of January. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League.
