In a recent edition of the Seamen Says Podcast, David Seaman urged his former club Arsenal to make a move for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins. Seaman said,
“[Watkins] is a good shout. Yeah, because he’s a box striker. He doesn’t get too involved in the build-up play which I like.
“I sometimes see Jesus too far out, and I’m like: ‘No, get back in the middle!’ It’s something everyone is talking about, getting a new striker would boost the team.”
Watkins’ Impressive Numbers In Premier League Football This Season
Watkins is having a terrific campaign at Villa Park as he has produced several influential displays for the Midlands club in the final third. The English sensation has registered 13 goals and eight assists in 23 matches for the Villans this season in multiple competitions.
The 27-year-old has led the line well by averaging 3.0 shots, 1.5 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he has lacked quality when linking up play with his teammates after completing only 74.4% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
What Will Watkins Bring To Arsenal?
Watkins is a decent dribbler with the ball and can set up some decent openings for others around him in the opponent’s half. He can generate a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal and can shoot the ball with power from all ranges. The English talent has proven himself to be a steaky goal-scorer during his time at Aston Vila. However, he has to find a way to improve his passing accuracy in the final third.
Watkins will bring more pace and goals to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta‘s frontline. He has what it takes to fight for a regular starting spot at the North London club in the future. The English sensation already knows the Premier League well by now and won’t take much time to settle into life at the Emirates Stadium.
At 27, Watkins is about to enter his prime which makes him a great choice for Arteta to pursue in the upcoming January transfer window. With all things considered, Arsenal should consider listening to Seaman’s advice by opting to recruit him as the Aston Villa star could boost their title hopes this season.
