In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Florian Plettenberg mentioned that Real Madrid are unlikely to move in for Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner. It has been stated that Los Blancos have cooled their interest in the German striker ahead of the January transfer window.
Werner’s Lack Of First-Team Starts In German Football
Werner has found game time hard to come by at the Red Bull Arena this season but has managed to put in a few impressive displays for the German outfit in the final third. The 27-year-old has found the back of the net twice and grabbed one assist in 13 matches for his current employers this season across all competitions.
The German international has caught the eye off the bench by averaging 1.1 shots and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. However, he needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution up top based on his pass completion rate of 70% in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club will run out in the summer of 2026. Hence, it won’t be easy for Los Blancos to try and arrange a cut-price move for him next year.
Real Madrid Are Unlikely To Move In For Werner: Right Call By Carlo Ancelotti?
Werner is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few promising runs with the ball out in the wide areas when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. He has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third and can shoot the ball with power from long range.
The German sensation is primarily a centre-forward but can also function as a winger on either flank if told to do so by his manager. He would have added more pace and quality to Real Madrid‘s attack.
However, Werner is far from a consistent forward and won’t be a good fit for Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti’s needs at the moment. Therefore, it seems like the Madrid giants have made the right call with regard to dropping their interest in Werner.
