In a recent interview (via El Correo), Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams’s agent offered an update on the future of the player amid interest from Aston Villa. He said,
“His contract will expire in June,
“We should not forget that situation.
“Athletic know what Nico wants since long time but there’s still no formal bid on the table to sign new deal. We’re still waiting.”
Williams’ Decent Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Williams is enjoying a decent campaign in La Liga after putting in a run of impressive displays on the left side of Bilbao’s attack. The Spaniard has registered one goal and grabbed five assists in ten matches for the Spanish outfit this season in multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old has given a good account of himself by averaging 1.7 shots, 2.1 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after making 78% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at the Spanish club will run out next summer which could open the door for the Villans to lure him to the Premier League on a free transfer in 2024.
What Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Do With Regards To Williams?
Williams is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball out in the wide areas. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third and can shoot the ball with venom and accuracy from long range. The Spanish sensation has done well to add a few goals and assists to his game this season.
We can expect Williams to enhance the quality of Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s first XI. He has what it takes to help the Villans challenge for European football in the Premier League over the next few years.
At 21, Williams has the ceiling to become a future star in English football. Hence, Emery would be wise to offer him a chance to shine at Villa Park when the youngster becomes a free agent next summer.
