In a recent report, Sport stated that Bayer 04 Leverkusen playmaker is dreaming of a move to Barcelona. It has been claimed that the Catalan club are in talks with the German talent’s entourage ahead of a potential move next year.
Wirtz’s Impressive Numbers In German Football This Season
The 20-year-old is having a great campaign at the German club as he has put in a series of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. Wirtz has scored six goals and grabbed ten assists in 17 matches for Leverkusen this season across all fronts.
The German talent has been a reliable performer in the opposition half based on his average of 2.1 shots, 2.7 key passes and 2.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing possession on the offensive end of the field, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 84.2% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Wirtz is under contract at the German club until the summer of 2027. Therefore, Barcelona will have to pay a big fee if they are serious about bringing the Leverkusen star to the Nou Camp next year.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Move In For Wirtz?
Wirtz can find a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third and is an excellent dribbler with the ball as well.
The German sensation mainly functions as an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a right-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if asked to do so. He deserves credit for scoring and creating his fair share of goals for Leverkusen this season.
We can expect Wirtz to add more firepower to Barcelona head coach Xavi’s attack. He might even help the Catalan club challenge for some major trophies over the next decade. At 20, the German talent has the potential to become a generational talent but Barca could struggle to meet Leverkusen’s asking price for their prized asset.
Still, Xavi should consider moving in for Wirtz as he would be a great acquisition for Barcelona in the long run. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in La Liga.
