In a recent report, The Athletic mentioned that Newcastle United have identified Everton midfielder Amadou Onana as a target. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are eyeing a move to land the Belgian talent in the upcoming January transfer window.
Onana’s Impressive Form At Merseyside This Season
Onana has proven his worth as a decent performer at Goodison Park this season after putting in a few impressive displays at the centre of Sean Dyche’s midfield. The Belgian sensation has picked up one assist in 11 matches for the Toffees during this campaign across multiple competitions.
The 22-year-old deserves a lot of credit for averaging 2.4 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.4 shots and 0.8 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from midfield after making 83.8% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Goodison Park will expire in the summer of 2027. Hence, Newcastle will have to launch a big-money offer if they are serious about recruiting Onana next year.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Snap Onana Up?
Onana is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can even strike the ball with venom from long range.
The Belgian midfield ace can even create the odd chance for his teammates up top. He is mainly a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a central defender if needed.
We can expect Onana to bring more bite and steel to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s midfield department. He has what it takes to fill in as an ideal replacement for Sandro Tonali who is set to face a spell on the sidelines.
Onana has what it takes to help the Magpies compete across all fronts in the coming seasons. Thus, the Tyneside club should try everything they can to snap him up this winter.
