In a recent report, iNews stated that Everton are facing stiff competition for Manchester City midfield ace Kalvin Phillips. It has been claimed that the Toffees will have to rival Newcastle United, West Ham United and Bayern Munich in the race to land the English talent.
Phillips’ Recent Frustrations At Man City
The 27-year-old has experienced a lackluster spell at Man City after struggling to earn a regular spot in their starting XI. Phillips has only featured in five matches for the Mancunian outfit this season across multiple competitions.
The English sensation has most of his appearances as a substitute which explains why he is only averaging 0.7 tackles, 0.3 interceptions and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He has been excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 90% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Phillips is under contract at Man City until 2028. Thus, Everton should only consider signing him on loan as they cannot afford to go on a bidding war with other clubs for his services next year.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Go For Phillips?
Phillips is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure possession back for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when required and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the opponent’s half.
However, frequent injuries have often derailed the English midfield ace’s progress at the Etihad Stadium. Plus, the lack of game time has seen his confidence take a hit as well.
Phillips mainly operates as a defensive midfielder but can also play as a centre-back or as a box-to-box midfielder if required.
Still, there is no denying that Phillips’ quality as he proved during his time at Leeds United. Hence, it makes sense for Everton boss Sean Dyche to go for him but only if he can sign him on loan.
Phillips could help the Toffees steer clear of the relegation zone and maybe even push for European football in the Premier League this season. Hence, the Merseyside club should focus on getting a loan deal done for him when the transfer window reopens at the start of next year.
