In a recent segment on talkSPORT (27 September, 11am), Simon Jordan backed Tottenham Hotspur to recruit Brentford striker Ivan Toney. Jordan said,
“If you have changed your agent to be able to achieve an outcome… In my opinion, based upon my experience, the bottom line is he’s changed agents to anticipate a move.
“There is an expectation of a move. He’s going to move.
“He is going, and the reason is that it’s very rare you see a top-class centre-forward become available in the January transfer window. So there’s a rarity to that little beast.
“I quite like him for Tottenham. I think he would be a signing for Tottenham but it begs a question what would happen for Richarlison in that respect.”
Toney’s Impressive Record In The Premier League Last Season
The 27-year-old had an excellent campaign at the Gtech Community Stadium recently but is currently suspended through sports court–cross competition until January 17, 2024. Toney netted 21 goals and picked up five assists in 35 appearances for Brentford last season across various competitions.
The English centre-forward caught the eye with his offensive contributions as he averaged 2.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he was sloppy when distributing possession on the attacking third of the field based on his pass success rate of 62% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
What Will Toney Add To Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu’s Team?
Toney can be a potent finisher in front of the opponent’s goal when he is playing regularly on the pitch. He can also be quite clever with his movements in and around the opposition penalty box.
The English forward can create some decent openings for his teammates up top. However, Toney has to figure out a way to improve his link-up play in the final third if he wants to be a success story at a top club like Tottenham.
The Brentford is good enough to add more firepower to Angelos Postecoglu’s attack. He might even help Spurs challenge for a top-four spot in the Premier League this season.
At 27, Toney is about to enter his prime soon which makes him a worthy target for the North London club to consider in the January transfer window.
