In a recent interview with talkSport, West Ham United head coach David Moyes offered an update on the club’s pursuit of Jesse Lingard. Moyes said,
“Jesse has trained with us for three weeks and he’s improved greatly from when he first came in.
“He’s in really good condition – much better condition than he was when he first came in.
“I have to say, when Jesse joined us two years ago I think he scored nine goals in 15 games and was probably the difference between us getting into Europe for the first time.
“I want to give him every opportunity to get himself back in condition and see how he does.
“So there’s no real update on it at the moment, just to say that he’s back and getting much closer to the levels of fitness where you’d hope he would be.”
Lingard’s Underwhelming Season At Nottingham Recently
Lingard is currently a free agent after being released by Nottingham Forest earlier this year. The English attacker struggled to find consistency with his performances for the Midlands club last season when he score just two goals and earned two assists in 20 matches in various competitions.
The 30-year-old struggled to be productive for Nottingham in the final third as he only averaged 0.6 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in Premier League football. However, he distributed possession relatively well after making 81.2% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
What Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Do With Regards To Lingard?
Lingard is a good dribbler with the ball and can make a few driving runs with the ball in the opponent’s half. He can even shoot the ball with venom and accuracy from long range.
However, the English talent has struggled to prove his fitness this year which has seen him become a free agent.
If Lingard can get into playing shape while training with West Ham, Moyes would be wise to offer him a contract. The English playmaker already had a fruitful loan spell at the East London club back in 2021.
Hence, Lingard won’t take much time to settle into Moyes’ brand of football at the London Stadium if West Ham decide to sign him.
