In a recent segment on Twitch, journalist Gerard Romero claimed that Barcelona remain determined to land Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo this summer. It has been stated that the Catalan club are eager to snap the Portugal international up in this ongoing transfer window.
Cancelo’s Impressive Loan Spell At Bayern Munich
Cancelo experienced a decent loan spell at Bayern Munich last season when he was responsible for putting in a run of eye-catching displays on the right wing. The Portuguese sensation scored one goal and picked up six assists in 21 matches for the German outfit in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.
The Man City full-back was a positive influence at both ends of the field by averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.9 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga football. He was even accurate when distributing possession from inside his half after completing 85.1% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Man City will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, Barca would have to make a convincing offer if they want to bring him to the Nou Camp during this summer transfer window.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Get Cancelo On Board?
Cancelo is a tough-tackling defender who can make a few important interceptions for his team inside his half. He can sense the danger well and usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.
The Portuguese sensation is a great dribbler with the ball as well and has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the opponent’s half. He can shoot the ball with venom from long range and is a proven performer at the highest level.
We can expect Cancelo to add more quality to Barcelona head coach Xavi’s first XI and help the Catalan club compete for some major honours over the next few years.
At 29, Cancelo has still got a lot of football left in him and would serve as a decent option for Barca to consider before the end of this summer transfer period. With all things considered, Xavi should focus on going all out to get the Man City ace on board this summer.
