Liverpool will begin their FA Cup journey against Plymouth Argyle tomorrow at Anfield and will hope to avoid any slips up. Although the Reds will rest most of their regulars, they are still favourites for the clash. With a League Cup semi-final against Southampton and a League cup fixture against Manchester United to contend with, Liverpool are unlikely to play their better players as Klopp will want them fit for the crunch games.
Plymouth are doing pretty well in League Two and are in an automatic promotion spot. In fact, they are just four points off first-placed Doncaster and will try to upset the Reds who are second as well, be it in the top flight!
Here’s how Liverpool could line up for the game.
Defence
Loris Karius, who was expected to take over as the number one goalkeeper, has had a bad start to his Liverpool career. He was replaced by Simon Mignolet who hasn’t done too much wrong and unless the Belgian comes under intense scrutiny, expect Karius to remain as just a Cup keeper. He’ll be keen to impress.
In front of the German custodian, the duo of Lucas and young Joe Gomez could start as the centre-backs. Gomez has had a long and hard battle in rehabilitation after back to back injuries. Klopp has placed a lot of faith on the youngster and the fans will be hoping that he comes up with a good performance. Lucas, on the other hand, will be expected to captain the side. Not a single transfer window has gone by where he hasn’t been linked with an exit! His versatility will come in handy in such games.
Alberto Moreno is expected to start at left-back and will be keen the impress. Young Trent Alexander-Arnold will play as the right-back.
Midfield
Kevin Stewart will relish his opportunity to play as the deepest midfielder and he’ll support by the duo of Emre Can and Ovie Ejaria. Can was disappointing against Sunderland and understandably so as it was his first full game since an injury. He’ll have a good chance to get back to full fitness and remove any rustiness in his game.
Attack
Ben Woodburn has had a season to remember and is likely to get another chance in the attack. Daniel Sturridge was pretty decent in the last game but we expect Divock Origi to get the nod this time. Sheyi Ojo had an impressive run in the latter half of last season and will be keen to replicate that when he gets his chance against Plymouth.
