In a recent edition of the Talking Transfers Podcast, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Aston Villa have tipped to seal a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier this summer. Bailey said,
“They are big players, they both would’ve played 20 games this season. In terms of Mings, I think they will go into the central defender market now, maybe a loan somewhere. I was thinking there, maybe Eric Dier could be an option there, It wouldn’t surprise me. Villa were looking at Aymeric Laporte before Pau Torres. Do they go down that route again? For Laporte or even Dier.”
Dier’s Impressive Run Of Form In North London Last Season
Dier played an important role in Tottenham’s squad last season when he managed to put in a run of solid displays at the heart of their backline. The 29-year-old made 42 appearances for the North London outfit in the previous campaign, scoring two goals and grabbing one assist in all competitions.
The English defensive ace has been a rock at the back based on his average of 0.9 shots, 1.1 key passes and 3.3 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from inside his half after making 85.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Move In For Dier?
Dier is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger quickly to secure possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the front foot.
The English sensation is proficient at playing his way out from the back and can use his strong 1.88m frame to dominate the opposition in the air.
We can expect Dier to enhance the quality of Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s defensive department. He could help the Villans push for a European spot in the Premier League this season.
