In a recent report, Tipsbladet mentioned that West Ham United have made contact to land FC Midtjylland midfielder Emiliano Martinez this summer. It has been claimed that the Hammers are eyeing a move to bring the Uruguayan talent in this off-season.
Martinez’s Impressive Form In European Football Last Season
Martinez enjoyed a solid campaign at the Danish club after he put in a series of impressive performances at the centre of the park. The 23-year-old played in 33 matches for FC Midtjylland last season, scoring one goal across multiple competitions.
The Uruguayan sensation gave a good account of himself in European football where he averaged 3.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 0.9 shots and 1.0 dribbles per game in the UEFA Europa League. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 81.4% of his attempted passes in European football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Danish club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, the Hammers will have to make a big offer if they are serious about bringing Martinez to the London Stadium ahead of the new season.
Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Get Martinez On Board This Summer?
Martinez can read the danger quickly and doesn’t mind clearing his lines when needed. He is primarily a holding midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so.
The Uruguay international is a solid tackler of the ball and can earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He can strike the ball with power from long range and is a decent dribbler as well.
We can expect Martinez to serve as a decent, long-term replacement for Declan Rice at the East London club. At 23, the South American talent would only get better in the coming seasons which makes him a worthy target for the Hammers to pursue in this off-season.
Martinez will add more bite and steel to West Ham boss David Moyes‘ midfield department and could help them compete across all fronts in the upcoming campaign. Thus, Moyes should focus on getting a deal over the line for the Uruguayan midfield ace this summer.
