In a recent report, Tuttosport (via Sport Witness) stated that Aston Villa are set to rival Newcastle United for Juventus star Federico Chiesa this summer. It is understood that the Villans are hoping to secure the services of the Italian winger during this summer transfer window.
Chiesa’s Inconsistent Season In Italian Football
Chiesa had a campaign of mixed emotions at the Turin club after he produced a few eye-catching displays but failed to be productive for them in front of the opponent’s goal. The Italian wide player took part in 33 matches for the Turin club last season, netting four times and securing six assists across all competitions.
The 25-year-old was a decent performer in the final third as he averaged 1.2 shots, 1.0 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game in Serie A football. He even distributed possession accurately in the opponent’s half after making 78.5% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
Chiesa is under contract at the Italian club until the summer of 2025. Thus, it won’t be easy for the Villans to sign him on the cheap in this off-season.
Will Chiesa Be A Dream Option For Aston Villa?
Chiesa is a decent dribbler with the ball and has got the vision to engineer a few promising chances in the final third. He can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range but needs to find a bit more consistency with his end product in the final third. Chiesa is primarily a left-sided winger but can also operate as a right-winger or play as a centre-forward up top if asked to do so by his manager.
Still, there is no denying that the Italian talent has got the skillset to be a success story at the highest level. Hence, he would be a dream option for the Villans as they continue to chase European football in the coming seasons.
At 25, Chiesa is about to enter his prime, so Unai Emery can expect to unlock the best out of him at Villa Park in the coming seasons. Thus, it makes sense for the West Midlands club to go all out to recruit the Italy international during this summer transfer window. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in English football.
