In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Barcelona ace Franck Kessie this summer. It has been stated that Spurs are hoping to recruit the Ivory Coast midfielder in this ongoing transfer window.
Kessie’s Lackluster Debut Season At The Nou Camp
Kessie was a sporadic presence in Xavi’s squad last season as he struggled to earn regular starts for Barca in La Liga. The 26-year-old participated in 43 matches for the Catalan club in the previous campaign, scoring three goals and grabbing three assists on all fronts.
The Ivory Coast talent made most of his appearances off the bench which explain why he only averaged 0.5 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, 0.4 clearances, 0.5 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was tidy when distributing possession from midfield after making 86.8% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Kessie is under contract at the Catalan club until the summer of 2026. Hence, Spurs will have to make a good offer if they want to recruit him this summer.
Will Kessie Be A Decent Option For Tottenham Hotspur?
Kessie is a good tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his side when he is playing regularly on the pitch. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can strike the ball with venom from long range. The Ivory Coast international is a powerful runner with the ball as well. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder if needed.
We can expect Kessie to bring more bite and steel to Angelos Postecoglu’s midfield. He might even help the North London giants compete for a top-four spot in the Premier League next season.
At 26, Kessie will only get better in the coming seasons. Thus, it makes sense for Spurs to arrange a move to sign him during this summer transfer period. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and would be a good option for Spurs to pursue in this off-season.
