In a recent report, The Evening Standard mentioned that Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse is keen on a move to West Ham United this summer. It is understood that the English talent wants to play in the Premier League again and would welcome a move to the East London club ahead of the new campaign.
Ward-Prowse’s Tough Campaign At St. Mary’s Stadium
The 28-year-old endured a difficult season at Southampton after he struggled to help them avoid being relegated from Premier League football. However, Ward-Prowse deserves some credit for scoring 11 goals and picking up five assists in 45 appearances for the Saints in the previous campaign in various competitions.
The English midfield ace gave a good account of himself at the centre of the park based on his average of 1.7 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.2 clearances, 1.2 shots and 1.9 key passes per game in the Premier League. He even distributed possession accurately from midfield as evidenced by his pass success rate of 85.3% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the English club will expire in 2026. However, Southampton’s relegation could open the door for West Ham to sign him on a cut-price deal this summer.
Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Snap Ward-Prowse Up This Summer?
Ward-Prowse can do a little bit of everything at the centre of the park. He is a good tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions in midfield. The English sensation usually clears the danger when needed and can make a few decent chances for his teammates from midfield. He can even strike the ball with power and precision from long range.
Ward-Prowse will inject more quality into West Ham boss David Moyes’ midfield. He might even help the Hammers challenge for a top-eight finish in the Premier League next season.
Ward-Prowse is good enough to serve as a good replacement for Declan Rice at the London Stadium this summer. Therefore, the Hammers would be wise to try everything they can to snap him up ahead of the new season. At 28, Ward-Prowse is currently playing in his prime and has what it takes to make an instant impact at the East London club if Moyes can get a deal done for him this summer.
