In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Ben Jacobs mentioned that West Ham United are dreaming of a move for Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka this summer. Jacobs said,
“Goretzka, for West Ham, is kind of a dream. There’s no denying that they like the player. But, at this point, there’s nothing more advanced than that.”
Goretzka’s Impressive Run Of Form In German Football
Goretzka enjoyed a decent campaign at the Allianz Arena in the previous campaign after he put in a run of influential displays for them at the centre of the park. The Bochum-born talent was involved in 40 matches for the German club last season, scoring six times and earning six assists in multiple competitions.
The 28-year-old was a good performer in both halves as he averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.5 shots and 0.8 key passes per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after making 82.8% of his attempted passes in the German top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Move In For Goretzka?
Goretzka is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can even shoot the ball with power from long range.
The German talent can even set up a few decent chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder or as an attacking midfielder if told to do so.
We can expect Goretzka to enhance the quality of West Ham’s first team and maybe, even help the Hammers compete for a top-eight finish in the Premier League next season. He would even be an excellent replacement for Declan Rice at the East London club.
Therefore, it makes sense for David Moyes to splash the cash on someone like Goretzka who would make an immediate impact at the London Stadium. However, it remains to be seen whether Goretzka can cope with the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football if West Ham manage to snap him up during this summer transfer period.
