West Ham United Set Their Sights On This Serie A Defender: Should Moyes Move In For Him?

In a recent tweet, journalist Orazio Accomando claimed that West Ham United have set their sights on Torino defender Perr Schuurs this summer. It is understood that the Hammers are willing to use Nikola Vlasic as a makeweight to land the Dutch centre-back.

Schuurs’ Impressive Run Of Form In Serie A

Schuurs put in a run of solid displays at the heart of Torino’s defence last season. The Dutch defensive ace participated in 36 matches for the Italian outfit in the previous campaign, registering one goal and two assists in multiple competitions.

The 23-year-old was a solid presence on the defensive end of the pitch as he averaged 1.7 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass success rate of 88.2% in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).

Schuurs is under contract at the Italian club until the summer of 2026. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Hammers to strike a deal for him in this off-season.

Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Move In For Schuurs?

Schuurs is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and can use his robust 1.91m frame to win a few aerial duels for his side. The Dutch defender is also proficient at playing his way out from inside his half.

We can expect Schuurs to bring more bite and steel to West Ham boss David Moyes’ defence. He has what it takes to secure a regular starting place at the London Stadium next season as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in England.

At 23, the Dutch sensation will only get better with each season. Hence, he would be a great choice for the Hammers to pursue during this summer transfer window.

The Torino star could help the East London club challenge for the European spots in the Premier League over the next few years. Thus, Moyes would be wise to move in for Schuurs before the end of this transfer window.
