In a recent report, Sky Sports mentioned that West Ham United are eager to recruit Manchester United defender Harry Maguire this summer. It is understood that the Hammers are showing interest in acquiring the services of the English centre-back ahead of the new campaign.
Maguire’s Tough Campaign At Old Trafford
Maguire experienced a difficult season at Man United after struggling to earn a regular starting spot in Erik ten Hag’s first XI. The England international was involved in 31 matches for the Mancunian giants in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.
The 30-year-old managed to prove his worth as a solid presence at the back by averaging 0.5 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per game in Premier League football. He has even been careful when distributing possession from inside his half as he completed 85.4% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Maguire’s current contract at Old Trafford will run out in the summer of 2025. Therefore, West Ham will have to make a convincing offer if they want to bring him to the London Stadium this year.
Should West Ham United Boss David Moyes Move In For Harry Maguire?
Maguire is a decent tackler of the ball and can make some solid interceptions at the back when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and can use his strong 1.94m frame to win a few aerial duels. However, the English defender sometimes lacks the pace to make recovering runs inside his half.
Still, there is no denying that Maguire will enhance the quality of West Ham‘s first team. He has what it takes to fight for a regular place in David Moyes’ starting XI next season and would no doubt add more depth to his match-day squad.
Thus, it makes sense for the Hammers to move in for Maguire during this summer transfer window as he might help them challenge for European football once again in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
At 30, Maguire has still got a few good years left in him to play in top-flight football. Thus, he would be a good, short-term signing for the East London club this summer.
