In a recent print edition, SportBILD mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are eager to make a €40m move for Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba. It is believed that Spurs are hoping to bring the Burkina Faso centre-back on board before the end of this summer transfer window.
Tapsoba’s Solid Season In German Football
Tapsoba enjoyed a decent campaign at the German club recently as he was responsible for putting in a run of dominant displays at the heart of their backline. The 24-year-old registered two goals and two assists in 47 matches for Leverkusen last season across all fronts.
The Burkina Faso international was a solid presence on the defensive end of the field based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.0 clearances per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 85.8% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club will run out in 2026. Hence, it won’t be easy for Spurs to sign him on the cheap this summer.
Is Tapsoba The Right Fit For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Tapsoba can get stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition attackers. He can scan the danger well to secure possession back for his side and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required.
The Burkina Faso talent can use his robust 1.94m frame to win his fair share of aerial duels. He is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
Someone with Tapsoba’s quality will no doubt bring more quality to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu‘s defence. He could help Spurs challenge for a top-four spot in Premier League next season.
At 24, Tapsoba has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good fit for the North London club in the long run. However, there are some concerns over whether he can cope with the physicality and high intensity of English football if Postecoglu manage to get a deal done for him during this summer transfer period.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting the Burkina Faso defensive ace during this summer transfer window as he has what it takes to be a success story in the Premier League.
