In a recent print edition, Brazilian newspaper Correio da Manhã claimed that Newcastle United are preparing to move in for Benfica star Goncalo Ramos this summer. It has been revealed that the Magpies are eyeing a move to recruit the Portuguese forward in this ongoing transfer window.
Ramos’ Impressive Record In Portuguese Football
Ramos enjoyed a brilliant campaign at the Portuguese club recently as he was responsible for putting in several match-winning displays for them in Liga Portugal. The Portuguese centre-forward found the back of the net on 27 occasions and grabbed 12 assists in 47 matches for Benfica last season across various competitions.
The 22-year-old was a consistent performer in the final third and did well to average 3.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. However, he lacked quality when distributing the ball up top, based on his pass completion rate of 72.7% in the Portuguese top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will expire in the summer of 2026. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Newcastle to sign him on a cut-price deal in this off-season.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Bring Ramos On Board?
Ramos is a proven finisher in front of the opponent’s goal based on his recent form in Portuguese football. He can even create some decent openings for others around him and is a decent dribbler with the ball as well. However, the Portuguese talent needs to improve his link-up play up top. There are some question marks over whether he can cope with the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of signing someone with Ramos’ quality. He would no doubt add plenty of firepower to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe‘s attack. The Portuguese footballer might even help the Magpies challenge for some major trophies in the coming seasons. At 22, he still has a lot of room to grow as a footballer.
All in all, it makes a lot of sense for the Tyneside club to make a move to bring Ramos on board before the end of this summer transfer window.
