In a recent report, The Daily Mail offered an update on the future of Everton forward Ellis Simms. It has been mentioned that the Toffees’ striker is generating interest from Swansea City, Coventry City, Stoke City and Ipswich Town this summer.
Simms’ Impressive Loan Spell At Sunderland Last Season
Simms had a decent loan spell at Sunderland last year but failed to make an impact at Goodison Park after being called back to the Merseyside club in January. The 22-year-old scored seven goals and earned a couple of assists in 17 appearances for the Black Cats in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The Oldham-born striker led the line well at times by averaging 1.9 shots and 0.9 key passes per game in the EFL Championship. However, he lacked quality when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 64.8% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current deal with Everton is set to run out at the end of next season. Therefore, the Toffees have got no choice but to cash in on Simms this summer.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Let Simms Go This Summer?
Simms can create a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. He has got the vision to engineer a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third. Standing at 1.91m, Simms can be a towering presence inside the opponent’s penalty box. However, the English sensation needs to work on improving his link-up play up top.
Simms is currently not guaranteed a regular starting spot at Goodison Park and would struggle to get into Sean Dyche‘s first XI next season.
Thus, it makes sense for Everton to Simms go this summer so that he can earn more playing time away from the Merseyside club. The Toffees can also benefit from cashing in on him and using the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of their squad during this summer transfer window.
At 22, Simms still has plenty of time to turn his career around and prove his worth at the highest level. However, it seems like his time at Merseyside might come to an end as he is on an expiring contract.
