In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Arsenal are close to recruiting Ajax star Jurrien Timber this summer. It is believed that the Gunners are eyeing a move to bring the Dutch talent to North London during this summer transfer period.
Timber’s Impressive Form In Dutch Football
Timber had a solid season at the Amsterdam club recently as he was responsible for putting in a string of impressive displays at the heart of their backline. The Dutch sensation participated in 47 matches for Ajax in the previous campaign, registering two goals and two assists on all fronts.
The 22-year-old gave a good account of himself on the defensive third of the pitch by averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.9 clearances, 0.9 shots and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Dutch Eredivisie. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass completion rate of 91.7% in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at the Dutch club will expire in 2025, so the Gunners would have to make a convincing offer if they want to get Timber on board before the end of this transfer window.
What Will Timber Bring To Arsenal?
Timber is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.
The Dutch defensive ace is primarily a central defender but can also operate as a right-back if told to do so by his manager. However, he still has a ton of room to grow as a footballer.
Timber is good enough to bring more quality to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta‘s defence. He might even help the Gunners challenge for some major honours over the next decade.
At 22, the future looks quite promising for Timber. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life at the North London club. All in all, it makes sense for Arteta to splash the cash on recruiting Timber from Ajax during this summer transfer period.
